Izzy’s Steaks & Chops, a cherished institution in San Francisco’s Marina District since 1987, has triumphantly reopened after an extensive renovation, blending its storied past with contemporary flair. Under the stewardship of Samantha DuVall Bechtel, daughter of founder Sam DuVall, the restaurant has undergone a thoughtful transformation that honours its legacy while embracing modern dining sensibilities.
At the heart of Izzy’s revival is a renewed focus on premium steaks, showcasing cuts sourced from Creekstone Farms in Kansas, renowned for their high-quality Black Angus beef. The menu, reimagined by Executive Chef Daniel Lucero -formerly of Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bistro - offers a selection that pays homage to classic steakhouse fare with refined European influences.
Signature offerings include the 8oz Filet Mignon, available grilled, blackened, or au poivre and the 14oz New York Strip Steak, each prepared to highlight the meat’s natural flavours. The 20-22oz Bone-In Ribeye stands out for its rich marbling and depth of taste. A nod to tradition, “The Gomez” - a 10oz Prime Rib named after the restaurant’s namesake - continues to delight patrons, served with Izzy’s own potatoes and creamed spinach.
Beyond the steaks, the menu features inventive dishes such as Prime Rib Ravioli, combining house-made pasta with ricotta and porcini mushrooms, reflecting Chef Lucero’s Italian culinary background.
The restaurant’s ambiance has been updated by New York’s Gachot design studio, preserving original architectural elements like wood detailing and vintage lighting, while introducing contemporary touches. The restored bar, a focal point of Izzy’s charm, invites guests to enjoy classic cocktails, including the minty Espresso Martini and the Flaming Sazerac, alongside a curated wine list developed by Dan Cameron, featuring selections from California and beyond.
Izzy’s Steaks & Chops seamlessly marries its rich history with modern culinary artistry, reaffirming its status as a cornerstone of San Francisco’s dining scene. For steak aficionados and newcomers alike, Izzy’s offers an experience that is both nostalgically familiar and excitingly fresh.
